Inspiration

Inspiration has an unusual history in that its figurative sense appears to predate its literal one. It comes from the Latin inspiratus (the past participle of inspirare, “to breathe into, inspire”) and in English has had the meaning “the drawing of air into the lungs” since the middle of the 16th century. This breathing sense is still in common use among doctors, as is expiration (“the act or process of releasing air from the lungs”).

What it does

Awakens us to new possibilities by allowing us to transcend our ordinary experiences and limitations.

How I built it

Spend Time in Silence Every Day. Practice just listening and wait for what enters your thoughts. ... Spend Time Outside in Nature. When you exercise, do it outside. ... Do Things That Truly Bring You Joy. ... Write in a Journal, Every Day if Possible. ... Write Down Your Dreams. ... Exercise.

Challenges I ran into

Their confidence in the face of hardship is driven by the ability to let go of the negativity that holds so many otherwise sensible people back.

Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania has studied this phenomenon more than anyone else has, and he’s found that success in life is driven by one critical distinction—whether you believe that your failures are produced by personal deficits beyond your control or that they are mistakes you can fix with effort.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I made it out of school alive even though I didn't like it. I've learned how to learn, outside of the classroom. I've only drank alcohol in triumph, never in sadness. I've made it to 27, healthy, and without any major regrets. I've never tried hard drugs or marijuana. I've made my own opinions.

What I learned

I've learned - That you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them.

I've learned - that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.

I've learned - that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I've learned - that it's not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I've learned - that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you'd better know something.

I've learned - that it's not what happens to people that's important. It's what they do about it.

I've learned - that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I've learned - that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

What's next for How to find the success

Most people would define success in life as including some measure of happiness. So don’t overlook goals that will support a happier life. Prioritizing relationships, physical health, safety, contributing to others, and creative expression have been shown to improve feelings of happiness.

Whatever your goals, these keys are the tools, habits, or pathways that will help you to achieve success, however you define it.

1st Key: Make A Plan

The very first key is planning for success. This means having a clear picture of what a successful life looks like to you and putting together a well-defined plan to get you to that life.

Planning well starts with figuring out what you want and writing it down in detail. This is the foundation for your plan. From there, set up the goals, step by step, that will get you to this life.

2nd Key: Prepare for the Unexpected

Many of the best laid plans have been derailed by a single misstep. It’s no accident we chose this as the 2nd of the 10 keys to success in life. Preparing for the unexpected can make the difference between your plans ending in failure or succeeding despite a bump in the road.
