Inspiration

As a writer for children, my goal is to inspire, but mostly to empower little ones. This virus, Covid-19, has impacted their lives in a big way. No school, changes in routine, distancing from grandparents. Very difficult for children of all abilities. Some children thrive on routine and this virus has taken 'normal' from them.

What it does

Our book, empowers children. It takes an ordinary substance (soap) and empowers the child. Children have no control over this virus or how it effects them. BUT, they can wash their hands. An ordinary, every day habit which gives them control over this very big virus. Something within their control to make them feel safe. They can feed their soap monster as much as they want and this keeps them healthy and their soap monster happy. It also teaches a valuable lesson of hygiene without being 'preachy.'

How I built it

We looked at every aspect of a child's world. We wanted a fun way to incorporate this virus into their world in a safe and empowering way. Children should feel in control. I enlisted the help of a brilliant artist to create the illustrations who also happens to be my sister in law.

Challenges I ran into

Computer software issues. The creative, art part was easy. Emailing large files, not so much, but we figured it out.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

My team has created a book during an unprecedented time to empower little ones. As an educator, I want to put a tool in the hands of children to give them control over their environment. "How To Feed Your Soap Monster" will accomplish our goal. Included are facts on corona in the back of the book and a fun STEM activity for kids.

What I learned

We most definitely need to include children in on the corona conversation.

What's next for "How To Feed our Soap Monster"

Publication! I hope.
