Inspiration
This project was inspired by a personal realization: I was spending more and more time on screens, yet reading less and less. I wanted a simple tool to help me track my reading and motivate myself to build a daily habit. After searching the Google Play Store and App Store, I couldn’t find anything that truly matched my vision — especially something minimal and distraction-free. So, I decided to build it myself.
What it does
How Much Have You Read Today? is a straightforward, distraction-free reading tracker designed to help users build and sustain consistent reading habits. The app allows users to log books, track how many pages they read each day, monitor their reading streaks, set personal reading goals, and unlock motivational achievements. This all happens without requiring them to read through the app itself. It encourages users to read physical books or use e-readers like Kindle, helping them stay focused and avoid digital distractions.
How we built it
I used the bolt in order to create the app. It was built with a focus on simplicity and user experience. The front end features a clean, user-friendly interface that supports both light and dark modes. Users can input book details, update daily reading sessions, and monitor progress over time. The backend, though currently limited, is designed to eventually support user authentication and cloud-based data storage. I have prioritized core functionality over feature overload to maintain a minimal, focused reading companion.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was implementing user authentication due to database constraints, which left the sign-in functionality partially implemented. Another challenge was maintaining the balance between useful features and simplicity. For instance, I deliberately chose not to include in-app reading to avoid distractions, even though many similar apps offer it. The interface was designed to include goal setting and progress tracking without overwhelming the user, which was also a key focus area.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of creating a tool that stays true to its purpose, which is to help people read more without adding screen time. I believe the motivational features like achievements, streaks, and inspirational quotes will make the experience rewarding, and the minimalist design will keep the app easy to use.
What we learned
I have learned a lot of things, but mainly how to turn a personal need into a functional app, and how important it is to stay committed to a clear, user-centred vision.
What's next for How Much You Have Read Today
Moving forward, I plan to fully implement the sign-in functionality and add cloud syncing so users can save and restore their reading history on different devices.
