Inspiration
We were inspired by our nostalgia for the childhood game Fireboy and Watergirl. To innovate on this classic game and help address social issues, we've created a 2D puzzle platformer featuring two players, Bouba and Kiki. Players work together to solve puzzles. This game addresses social issues such as building inclusivity, environmental consciousness, and fostering relationships!
What it does
Our project is a playable multi-level platformer with two different characters with different ability sets, following their journey through space as they solve puzzles and clean up the earth along the way.
How we built it
We created hand-drawn 2D animations and backgrounds, then used Unity to put everything together by writing scripts for our creative puzzles. We made technical decisions in gameplay and mechanics, as well as design decisions such as level designs, themes, and graphics.
Challenges we ran into
One difficulty included the animation of the water in the first level, as well as the development of the disappearing platform game mechanic. Many of our ideas for water and physics were difficult to implement and involved extensive debugging, but we were able to implement much of what we planned.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team of first-year students, we're so proud of competing in our first hackathon! We were able to use our diverse skillsets to address the many different aspects of this project. Much like Bouba and Kiki, we were able to puzzle through by working together!
What we learned
We learned how to work with Unity, import animations and graphics, compose musical soundtracks, and collaborate efficiently by sharing our files through Drive.
What's next for How Far We'll Go
We have so many more ideas for new levels with additional mechanics, new playable characters with other skillsets, and perhaps not only local shared gameplay but online connections as well. We firmly believe that our game How Far We'll Go has only begun its journey of how far it'll go!
