My inspiration

I loved hearing about applications of AI in lockdone lectures and wanted to find out more! I decided to focus on something that impacts so many of us and is especially relevant at the moment- mental health

Synopsis

My paper will discuss current and potential applications of artificial intelligence in the prevention and diagnosis of mental health disorders in the UK to improve the country’s wellbeing and reduce pressure on the National Health Service. Where appropriate, limitations of these techniques will be considered and evaluated.

Challenges I Faced

In order to understand the benefits of using AI not only did I have to learn more about artificial intelligence techniques like deep neural networks, but I often had to read into the applications. I found myself looking into subjects like genetics, NHS targets and data laws. It was a lot of information to tackle over four days but was certainly worth it!

What I learnt

I learned that there is far more to using AI than just coming up with ideas and the development of the technology. We also need psychologists and doctors to provide medical expertise while philosophers, lawyers and politicians are required to ensure moral ethical standards are upheld.

What's next for How can AI be used to prevent and diagnose mental illness?

I want to look further into how we can diagnose mental diseases by analysing the way individuals behave online. I think there's so much that could be done to fight mental illness particularly in young people using those techniques but again the ethics of that is extremely interesting too!
