Inspiration
The inspiration came from interacting with my cat, Gibby, Saturday morning. I had not planned this beforehand. I was with him and I realized the extent of needs that pets can have. I decided I would make this website as a general way to gather information and allow users to be more informed about how to take better care of their pets.
What it does
From a non-technical perspective, the website allows for user creation and pet creation. The pet creation recommends a photo, which is analyzed and predicts the animal's species, breed, and age group. Then 5 reports can be generated; diet, hygiene, health, insurance, and materials. These reports can be edited by user and can interact with the API directly to request changes. These changes keep the core information but may add information like treats which is not normally included. The items shown connect to Amazon and there is a GPS functionality to show nearby stores which may have the materials recommended. There is also a calendar which has a calendar for when the owner should do certain tasks, like feeding a dog, taking their cat to the vet, or cleaning the tank of a clownfish. This all occurs with a multi-hierarchical system. The orchestrator sits at the top and writes all the information to the website, while the picture analyzer, diet, hygiene, health, insurance and materials agents all fetch information from the web and write to the orchestrator in JSON. The Orchestrator gets the final say and alters text as needed. The agents are powered using Gemini 3.8 Flash.
How we built it
I built it using Claude Code, Model OPUS 5.5 and Google Gemini. I deployed it using DigitalOcean and purchase a temporary domain from GoDaddy. It was fully built within the Claude Code interface and Visual Studio Code. We also used Neon for the database using POSTGRES SQL. For Authentication, I used Neon Auth and Next.js
Challenges we ran into
Deploying and ensuring the domain was connected was surprisingly challenging. There is also DNS caching which varies per user which allows the website to run, but this has only been experienced on Google Chrome. If you experience this issue, use another browser. Beyond that, the general planning stage was somewhat difficult; how are we going to manage user sessions and store our data? How are we going to revoke access and allow users security?
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am very proud to have built this as a solo project. It is not reinventing the wheel, but I do think there is genuine use for this.
What we learned
I learned how to create a multi-agent workflow with segregated tasks and ensuring the design proposed by AI was not fully implement without overview. I made sure every change was founded in the schema, grounding it to real data.
What's next for House of Pets
The sky is the limit. If I want to market it, that is an option and could enter contracts with vendors to recommend their products. I could allow the users to make more efficient changes to the reports. I could introduce new animals which can be handled. Due to time constraints and inexperience, I did not build a Machine Learning Model, but doing so to identify animals would be immensely useful. I could connect to the Calendar app on phones and allow users to have their calendars updated that way so they only have one calendar. This project had to be narrowed in scope, but in theory, the ways forward are nearly endless.
