Inspiration
As a lifelong hot sauce lover, I grew frustrated with sifting through generic lists to find sauces that fit my heat tolerance and recipe needs. Whether I was making tacos, BBQ, or breakfast eggs, I wanted a way to quickly find sauces that matched my flavor profile—so HotSauce Finder was born.
What it does
HotSauce Finder is a discovery platform for hot sauce enthusiasts. Users filter sauces by heat level (mild to extreme), flavor type (smoky, fruity, vinegar-forward, etc.), and key ingredients. Each sauce card shows core details, and the detail page offers ratings, reviews, food pairing tips, and easy purchase links.
How we built it
I started by mapping core user needs (filtering, comparison, discovery) and designing a responsive page structure (Homepage + Sauce Detail Page). I coded the filter logic to update results instantly, built a grid layout for sauce cards, and integrated visual heat indicators and star ratings for clarity.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was ensuring filter logic worked seamlessly with multiple selections—avoiding broken results or slow load times. I also struggled with making the grid fully responsive across mobile, tablet, and desktop without sacrificing usability for touch interactions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We hit our goal of 50+ sauce entries on launch, built filters that update in real time, and created a visual design (burnt orange, charcoal gray, cream) that feels warm and approachable for hot sauce lovers. The sauce cards are intuitive, and navigation between pages is smooth.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of responsive design principles and real-time filter logic. I also learned how to balance visual appeal with functionality—making sure critical info (Scoville units, flavor tags) is front-and-center without cluttering the interface.
What's next for this project
Next, I want to add a text-based advanced search, side-by-side sauce comparison, and personalized recommendations based on browsing history. I also plan to expand the sauce library and integrate real affiliate links for seamless purchasing.
