Inspiration
When many women look in the mirror, they have constant issues with their body image. Women are bombarded with unrealistic – and often harmful – representations of what an "ideal" woman looks like on a daily basis. The sad message is that in order to be valuable in society, women must be skinny and appear young. As teenagers ourselves, we have also come across moments where we compare our natural bodies to edited, flawless pictures. As a result, we decided to draw inspiration from our own personal struggles and experiences in order to undo the harm created by these beauty standards.
What it does
This app will enable women to break free from unnecessary expectations and begin to accept themselves and their natural bodies. The positive affirmations, frequent reminders to help with living a healthy life, and much more on our app, women are encouraged to recognize the aspects of themselves that they appreciate. Putting physical characteristics aside, non-physical characteristics such as being smart, kind, humorous, or a good friend are also valued. Women can also learn that they are not alone by participating in forums where they can chat with other women who are going through similar issues. They will learn that what they perceive to be their "insecurities," such as body fat, body hair, height, and so on, are normal for everyone. Women who are more aware of excessive beauty standards are less likely to believe what they see on social media and are more likely to absorb information with caution.
How we built it
- We used java to build decision maker, both games, negativity blocker, tracker
- We used python to build the positive affirmation
- We used canva to build a prototype of forum
- We used wix to build a prototype of the app, and show all the different aspects of the app.
Challenges we ran into
- Time management- We were constantly making deadlines for ourselves, and we found it difficult to meet all of them.
- All proficient in different coding languages (it was hard to tie everything together)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We are incredibly proud of the general idea of Hot Girl Stunner. Societal expectations have been around for so long, and photoshop and filters have not made it any better. We are so happy that we are able to help other women through this app, and remind them that they are beautiful!
- The aesthetic design and meaning behind it is also something we are proud of!
What we learned
- We learned how to work under pressure and manage our time efficiently, especially as the deadline to submit got closer and closer.
- We also learned how to work together as a team and utilize each of our skills in the best way possible. Some of us were better at coding, some better at design, some better at editing. We worked as a strong group of four and were able to create an amazing product.
What's next for Hot Girl Stunner
- Building it into a mobile app with the help of professionals
- We want to add more features such as a mood journal to our app
- Working with body-positive influencers is also something we want to do in the future.
- Improving accessibility for everyone
