Children are forgotten and die in hot cars every year. We tried to address this with a solution that uses computer vision and IoT to notify a parent when their child is being left in a hot car to remind them that their child is on the trip with them and should be taken out of the car. We used an Intel d435i Realsense stereo camera to identify humans in the car using standard computer vision. A DHT11 temperature sensor monitors the temperature in the car. If the car is getting hot with occupants within it, data is sent to a Raspberry Pi 4 where it receives the notification and pushes it to the parent via SMS.
Advantages of our solution is that it is able to detect multiple creatures (not just small children) such as pets and elderly. This allows it to be marketed to a wider userbase.
