Inspiration

The inspiration behind Hostage came from the fact that me and my partner were also pretty lazy once, and weren't really motivated to achieve our goals. This started like many people when as a new years resolution we wanted to start going to the gym. As weeks passed, however we started to diminish from 4 times a week to 3 to 1 to once every couple weeks etc. We realize that this was a problem that needed solving and thus we created Hostage to help others from falling into the same trap.

What it does

Hostage is an app that encourages productivity by allowing customers to stake their money against their goals. If the goals are not achieved on a predetermined schedule, the money will be donated to charity. Hostage believes in accountability and giving back to society to help individuals achieve their full potential while contributing to a better world.

How we built it

We built this application using A tech stack of Next.JS and and Auth0

Challenges we ran into

We meant to have a very extensive database, however, we ran into many challenges combining the front end with the database and ended up not being able to complete the thing.

We also ran into challenges in the fact that we were expecting third teammate who specialized in backend, however he ran into travel challenges and could not make it, so we persevered to make it through even though we ran into a variety of backend and DB challenges

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to integrate a new technology that we learned about which was Auth0, which was great for authentication and we are glad we came here to learn about it. As well as that we were able to make a fairly visually appealing landing page and made use of different APIs

What we learned

We learned about Auth0 as well as databases, and collaboration, as me and my teammate are more used to be front end developers on our own, but together we are also able to combine ideas and work harder.

What's next for Hostage

Our next steps for Hostage are to fully and successfully implement the user system so that people can accurately track their goals as well as a STRIPE API in order to process payments. On top of that we want to lean a bit away from the main negative reinforcement brand and have a slight positive tinge in the fact that we would like to introduce a leaderboard where those who are completing the most of their Verified goals(i.e no cheating goals) and the top 3/month would be eligible for some prizes
