Hospital Bed Occupancy is a web app for helping hospital teams keep track of beds and coordinate patient admissions. The idea came from a practical challenge: when bed availability, admission requests, and patient transfers are handled across separate processes, it can be difficult to get a clear picture of capacity and keep decisions coordinated. We built the project with a React frontend and an Express backend, using PostgreSQL to store hospitals, wards, beds, patients, admissions, transfers, and a history of admission events. The app brings workflows such as bed management, admission requests, patient transfers, waiting lists, and operational dashboards into one place. Building it taught us how closely operational workflows depend on a well-structured data model. We had to represent changing states—such as a bed moving from available to occupied, or an admission request progressing through review—while preserving a useful history of what happened. Keeping those relationships and transitions consistent was one of the main challenges. The project is a step toward making bed capacity easier to understand and manage, so hospital staff can spend less time piecing together operational information and more time coordinating care.
