Inspiration

Its hard to pick the right flick to watch on movie night... Its even harder around spooky season because, believe it or not, there are souls out there that don't like horror movies. Well... I love horror movies! The thing I like more than watching horror movies is watching them with "first-timers!"

One fateful night, we were throwing a Halloween themed party for a reunion and a good majority of people stayed long enough to watch some movies after the party was over. Half of the group was scared of horror movies, even though they know its fake, so we decided to make up a drinking game so it would be easier to keep them interested. Little did we know that we would be playing this game with others for years to come.

It was simple. We always wrote down the same 5 rules on a paper and placed it on a coffee table and as the years went on, we started adding rules and switching up which ones we wanted to use. I gathered all the best ones and decided to make an app about it so we would always have it on hand wherever we were.

What it does

The rules of the game are simple. There are 5 cliche scenes that almost every horror movie has, so we put those rules at the top adn they always stay active. Whenever any of the scenes happen, everyone playing the game takes a drink.

To make it more fun, we added 30 different "Scene Cards" that can be invoked into the field of play, but they can only be summoned for 20 minutes. Once the 20 minutes end, the card returns to the grave. But if the scene on the card happens before the timer runs out, everyone drinks and the next card is flipped over.

How we built it

This was built entirely on bolt.new with one prompt. It is integrated with supabase so premium users can add their own cards to the deck.

Challenges we ran into

This one was pretty simple as far as making the app, but the challenge was to come up with enough cliche scenes to add to a deck. I wanted to go with 30 so it would be divisible by 3.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very proud that this worked with only one prompt and I didnt even enhance it.

What we learned

I learned that apps do not have to be so complicated. They can be fun and engaging wihtout needing much of an interface.

What's next for Horror Movie Drinking Game

I would like to make this available in all app stores. The next thing I would like to do is to play this game while live streaming and make it a podcast with a community and a store. Be on the lookout for more on this later!
