Inspiration
The fashion industry is plagued by exploitative working conditions, especially for women, and a lack of transparency regarding how clothes are made. Consumers want to make more ethical choices but struggle to access reliable information about company practices. Our inspiration came from the desire to empower consumers with the tools to shop responsibly, while promoting fairness and better working conditions in the garment industry.
What it does
Horizen is a blockchain-based platform that tracks fashion supply chains, ensuring transparency, fairness, and real-time data. Our Chrome extension alerts users when they view a product with a low ethical score, encouraging responsible shopping.
How we built it
We leveraged blockchain technology (Internet Computer Protocol) to create a decentralized, immutable ledger that records the supply chain data of fashion companies. We integrated this into a user-friendly Chrome extension that analyzes products in real-time, delivering ethical score alerts directly to consumers.
Challenges we ran into
- Blockchain Integration: Integrating the blockchain database with the Chrome extension
- Data Accuracy: While actual fashion supply chain data was not gathered and stored in blockchain for this hackathon, gathering and verifying accurate supply chain data in the future will be difficult due to the possibility large amounts of unsorted data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully building a decentralized blockchain solution to track fashion supply chain data.
- Creating a fully functional Chrome extension that provides real-time ethical scores. on products viewed.
What we learned
- How to develop with blockchain using Internet Computer Protocol
- How to build Chrome extensions
What's next for Horizen - Decentralized Fashion Supply Chain
Moving forward, we plan to initiate our database of fashion companies by partnering with research orgs and non-profits to get the data. We've already highlighted key databases that we want to integrate to the backend of the blockchain. The ultimate goal is to drive an industry-wide change by encouraging brands to adopt fairer and more sustainable supply chain practices.
