Horizon travelling social media

It is a social network based on people's recordings of traveling. You can follow people, see their trajectory on a world map, and explore new traveling experiences instead of common recommendations.

Inspiration

During the summer I found more and more people around me are using a social media called Xiaohongshu, which is mostly for visual information transmission like photos and videos. The reason most people start to use this APP is that they are amazed by others’ traveling experiences. Thus, I feel it has a huge market and we decided to do a social media development only focusing on traveling and users’ interaction with each other.

What it does

It is a website where users can follow people, they are interested in for posting their personal experiences onto this website. As you go into one’s profile, you can see his/ her past traveling experience as a trajectory connected by each dot on a world map. Beside each dot, there is one tag recording the date they posted, their location, and their comments about this traveling.

How we built it

We first discussed several topics and finally chose this one after serious consideration. Then we designed the solutions for implementation and decided to use Django.

Challenges we ran into

The greatest challenge was to implement the map onto the website and update the website as we refresh it. Since our idea is new, we can hardly find someone who has done this before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The accomplishment I think would be to make this whole project work within such a short period of time and we have already had a plan of how our project is going to be in the future.

What we learned

We learned how important it is to collaborate and communicate while doing intensive work and more importantly, the time management of balancing working and resting is vital.

What's next for Horizon travelling social media

In the future, we first need to have an image function so that while users interact with others or simply post, more information can be provided. Second, we are thinking about using Open AI API to get the locational salary and cost level. Taking the user’s local currency power as another input, a recommendation would be provided to the users. The benefit and potential for this program is that it provides users an opportunity to make traveling plans in both an emotional and logical way.
