Inspiration
The core inspiration behind this project was to strip down the traditional, often bloated MOBA formula into a tight, highly optimized, action-first experience. Instead of the massive three-lane maps that require extensive asset budgets and long match times, the goal was to create a focused, high-stakes single-lane brawler.
What it does
Project Horizon Heroes redefines the classic multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) by condensing complex, long-form matches into a fast-paced, highly tactical single-lane brawler. Streamlined Single-Lane Combat: The game strips away traditional three-lane map clutter to focus two opposing teams down a single, highly contested central lane.
How we built it
Optimized Asset Pipelines: To keep the game highly performant, the defense towers were built using a unified modular blueprint. Instead of unique models for opposing bases, both teams share identical high-fidelity geometric meshes. Team alignment is handled entirely through distinct color-swapped emissive crystals and materials (Radiant Blue vs. Dire Red).
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was achieving the perfect spatial balance along the central lane. In early iterations, the map felt either too claustrophobic or completely empty.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
True Architectural Optimization: We successfully implemented a unified modular blueprint for our towers. By utilizing identical structural meshes across teams and relying strictly on color-swapped emissive profiles (Radiant Blue vs. Dire Red), we achieved a massive reduction in unique asset overhead without breaking player immersion
What we learned
Smart Pipelines Beat Heavy Assets: We learned that great art direction can intentionally drive engine performance. Instead of asking the hardware to load entirely distinct environments and assets, a robust technical pipeline—like color masking and modular building—can create high-fidelity variation at a fraction of the performance cost.
What's next for Horizon Heroes
Scaling the Jungle Camps: Now that the central lane is beautifully streamlined and the 3-tower pacing is established, we want to fully build out and test the neutral creep mechanics in the flanking jungle paths to reward roaming playstyles.
