Inspiration

Heat waves are becoming more frequent and dangerous, but traditional alerts often fail to account for individual health needs or community vulnerabilities. We wanted to build a system that goes beyond generic warnings to deliver actionable, personalized guidance that helps people stay safe.

What it does

Horizon (My Buddy) is an AI-powered heat alert system that combines weather, health, and community data to generate community-level risk alerts. Users can personalize these alerts around their health conditions, environment, and routines. A built-in chatbot provides tailored guidance, such as safe medication practices, hydration reminders, and localized hazard management tips.

How we built it

We integrated multiple data streams, including weather forecasts, public health guidelines, and community risk indicators. The backend processes this data to generate heat risk levels and personalize alerts for users. The chatbot was built using natural language processing to deliver accessible, easy-to-follow guidance.

Challenges we ran into

Harmonizing diverse data sources into a single risk model.

Ensuring medical guidance was accurate, safe, and responsibly framed.

Designing personalization without overwhelming users with too many inputs.

Building trust in AI recommendations for something as critical as health.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a functional prototype that integrates real weather and health data.

Building a chatbot that can deliver practical, user-friendly advice.

Designing a system that bridges the gap between community-wide alerts and personal health needs.

Raising awareness about climate-driven health risks in a way that feels supportive, not alarmist.

What we learned

Effective personalization requires balancing user input with automation.

Health-related AI must be designed with extra caution and responsibility.

Community engagement is just as important as data science when tackling climate challenges.

What's next for Horizon

Expanding beyond heat to cover other climate hazards such as poor air quality and flooding.

Partnering with local health agencies and community groups to scale adoption.

Enhancing the chatbot with multilingual support and accessibility features.

Developing predictive analytics for early intervention and preventive care.
