Inspiration

We are inspired by the pirates theme from the hackathon and we love food, thus we decide to make a small game-like website where the user have to travel the whole world, making different foods and recipes of each continent.

What it does

Hopper's Odyssey is an interactive web application where the user joins Hopper on a pirate ship journey across the globe. Users can click on different regions of the world to discover pirate themed recipes inspired by the cultural flavors of each region. The project aims to celebrate diversity in cuisine while subtly introducing users to the world of coding and technology through its interactive design.

How we built it

We built Hopper's Odyssey using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Since its our first time in a hackathon and making a project in 24 hours, we decided to stick to the basic and try to use the most out of our limited knowledge. The project started with brainstorming the idea and the design, followed by the making of the wire frames. Then we used HTML and CSS to build the actual website and JavaScript for interactivity.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges for us was learning and implementing JavaScript, HTML, and CSS on the fly, as some team members were new to these technologies. We also faced difficulties in creating a seamless user experience, especially with the interactive map and animations. Balancing the design to be both visually appealing and functional was another hurdle. Additionally, coordinating as a team and dividing tasks effectively required constant communication and adaptability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a fully functional and visually engaging web application in a short amount of time. Even though it may not be the best looking website out there, we've managed to finish this project, which was still an achievement for us.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned not only the technical skills of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS but also the importance of teamwork and collaboration. We gained a deeper understanding of the development process, from idea creation to actually making it come to live, and how to troubleshoot and solve problems on the fly.

What's next for Hopper's Odyssey

In the future, we plan to expand Hopper's Odyssey by adding more regions and recipes. It would also be cool to add gamification elements, such as earning badges for exploring regions or completing coding challenges. Improving the UI/UX and making it look better overall will definitely help transform the website.
