HopInn

Inspiration

Travel planning often feels fragmented — one app for browsing, another for booking, and yet another for sharing experiences. We wanted to create something that brings it all together in a seamless and engaging way. Inspired by platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com, but also by the desire to add a community touch, we built HopInn to simplify how people discover, book, and share unique stays.

What it does

HopInn is a web application that allows users to

  • Discover curated listings of stays.
  • Book accommodations directly with a smooth interface.
  • Share experiences and reviews to help others in their travel journey.
  • Explore travel recommendations personalized to user preferences.

How we built it

We developed HopInn using the MERN stack:

  • Frontend: React with ShadCN UI for a clean, responsive interface.
  • Backend: Express and Node.js to handle requests efficiently.
  • Database: MongoDB Atlas for flexible and scalable data storage.
  • Deployment: Hosted on Render for easy CI/CD integration.

Challenges we ran into

  • Integration hurdles: Connecting third-party APIs (like maps and cloud storage) caused deployment hiccups.
  • UI/UX decisions: Striking the balance between a clean interface and rich features was tricky.
  • Database structuring: Designing schemas for listings, users, and reviews required multiple iterations.
  • Render deployment issues: Environment variable management and slower builds delayed initial testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully functional prototype in limited hackathon time.
  • Designed an intuitive, modern interface that feels production-ready.
  • Successfully deployed a MERN stack app with authentication and listings.
  • Created a recommendation flow that makes the platform more than just a booking site.

What we learned

  • Effective use of MERN stack in a real-world, multi-feature project.
  • The importance of modular code design for scaling and debugging.
  • Hands-on experience with deployment pipelines and managing environment variables.
  • How to prioritize features during a hackathon without losing focus.

What's next for HopInn

  • Mobile app version to reach a wider audience.
  • Smarter recommendation system using ML models for personalized suggestions.
  • Payment gateway integration for seamless bookings.
  • Community features like travel groups, shared itineraries, and social discovery.
  • Continuous UI/UX refinement to make HopInn feel even more engaging.
