About the Project: HopeGuide – An AI Companion for Depression Support

Inspiration

The idea for HopeGuide emerged from a deep concern for the millions who silently struggle with depression. Many people lack access to mental health resources or hesitate to seek help due to stigma and fear of judgment. We wanted to create an always-available, non-judgmental space where anyone could talk freely and feel heard.

How We Built It

HopeGuide was developed as an AI-powered chatbot that blends psychology with conversational AI. Key components include:

  • Integration of the PHQ-9 questionnaire to assess depression severity and initiate meaningful dialogue.
  • Use of transformer-based language models for context-aware, empathetic conversations.
  • Backend powered by FastAPI, with deployment on AWS, and leveraging Hugging Face Transformers.
  • Designed with a custom conversation flow to move from structured assessment to free-form emotional support.

What We Learned

  • Building emotional intelligence into AI requires careful design, not just smart models.
  • Translating clinical tools like PHQ-9 into natural conversations improves user comfort and honesty.
  • Mental health tools need to be designed with empathy, safety, and user trust as top priorities.

Challenges We Faced

  • Ensuring the chatbot could maintain a coherent and comforting tone after structured questions.
  • Avoiding generic responses while maintaining safety and ethical boundaries in mental health support.
  • Balancing technical performance with real-time responsiveness and emotional nuance.
