Inspiration
We believe that emergencies do not include just natural disasters and health complications -- mental health should also be considered into it. Many people clam up when it comes to discussing their mental health and suicidal thoughts, so we figured it would be a good idea to create a safe space by bringing together a community of people who have struggled or are struggling with mental health so that they can uplift or be uplifted.
What it does
Hope networks those struggling with mental health and suicidal thoughts (named Hope Seekers) with those who have recovered from such thoughts (named Hope Givers). Additionally, it assigns the user three Mindfulness Tasks: mood tracking, daily affirmations, and 5-minute breathing exercises. There is also a support system in which the user can add emergency numbers that will be contacted when they are in immediate distress and may compulsively harm themselves. The support system also displays health facilities near the user's location.
How we built it
We used Thunkable and scratch code to build the app and Canva to create the visuals used. For the people used in the profiles, we used thispersondoesnotexist.com
Challenges we ran into
Neither of us have used Thunkable, so it was a challenge learning how to use it. As for design, we ran into some difficulties with Canva when making our logo, profiles, and background.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of picking up this challenge of making an app despite our modest coding experience. Additionally, we are very proud of the concept we thought of because we genuinely think that it can be of use to those struggling.
What we learned
In making this app, we learned about methods utilized to help people who are dealing with suicidal thoughts and poor mental health.
What's next for Hope
For Hope, we hope to make it into a more sophisticated app with a functional messaging interface and geolocating feature. As said earlier, our coding experience is very modest so we were unable to add such features in our narrow timeframe. However, we would love to pour more effort into Hope and watch it grow and develop into an app that provides solace to those that need it.
