Inspiration
Many emotions start as physical sensations before we label them. How might we use sensory data to help people understand, maximize and affirm their core emotional state?
What it does
CoreState is a speculative wellness platform designed to help people better understand and regulate their internal emotional states by making invisible sensory data visible and actionable. Built around the concept of interoception, CoreState transforms emotional awareness from a reactive experience into an intentional practice of self-understanding and performance optimization.
The platform integrates wearable biosensors—such as smart watches, neural headbands, and other emerging biometric technologies—to capture physiological signals like muscle tension, heart rate variability, and other indicators connected to emotional states. These signals are translated into meaningful insights that help users recognize what they are feeling and why.
CoreState then guides users through tools designed to build emotional intelligence and resilience. An emotional vocabulary builder helps users connect physical sensations with specific emotions, making it easier to identify and communicate internal states. A flow state optimizer analyzes biological patterns to identify when users are most likely to enter peak performance states. The system also provides recovery training and emotional pathway guidance, helping users move from negative or reactive emotional states toward healthier, more balanced ones.
By combining biometric data with reflective tools, CoreState empowers individuals to move beyond instinct and conditioning, enabling them to intentionally shape their emotional wellbeing, improve performance, and deepen their understanding of themselves.
How we built it
We did research, wrote HMW's, came up with ideas, developed personas and user stories, brainstormed feature ideas, drafted user flows and sketched on a figjam board. Then we prototyped in FigmaMake.
Challenges we ran into
- Not being able to connect FigmaMake files
- Having to make our serperate files match
- Copying the FigmaMake design only copies a screenshot, not the whole design
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Working well as a team!
- Becoming better designers
- Learning how to better prompt FigmaMake by the end
What we learned
- To not design for the interface, but design the interface. It was too easy to stick to the path that FigmaMake set out for you instead of coming up with something novel
- Understanding of the problem space and users becomes extra important when you can prototype designs so quickly. Don't get caught too deep in the AI prompting that you forget to tie it back to the users.
What's next for CoreState
We'll see what happens when the sensory technology is developed. In the meantime, we encourage you to look for other ways to stay emotionally regulated in your daily lives!
