During the pandemic, so many of our friends and peers including myself have felt a lack of motivation during the pandemic. It was hard maintaining consistent progress in their workout goals, especially when isolated from our peers. As someone who would like to go to the gym more, but despises the idea of working out alone, I came up with the idea to make a social workout app that allows people like me to find gym buddies who are in the same position, and allows you to meet new people as well! That’s why we decided to create HoosYourFit, an app designed for finding your perfect workout partners at UVA.

We started out by designing and prototyping our idea in Figma and came up with a mock-up of what we wanted to create. We designed our prototypes for mobile screens as we had initially intended to create a mobile app. However in the end, we decided to develop a website and host it onto a domain. This is because all of us decided to attend the React workshop, and since one of our teammates had some prior experience in React, while the rest of us were curious to learn more about how to work with React, we shifted our designs towards desktop screens, but following similar designs to what we had created as our mobile mockups.

Another problem we encountered was using the domain name server and configuring the records for it. Many times, the application would appear different depending on the browser, computer, etc and it made us learn that the domain name server changes do not propagate automatically.

Finally, deployment was difficult as most of our experience has been running projects locally. We had to understand that seem relatively simple but were hard looking back such as relative URLs, heroku deployment, etc.

Although we didn't create a fully-fledged project as we had planned, we are very happy with what we had created based on the time-constraints of the hackathon and our prior knowledge coming in. We learned a lot about React and hosting domains from research, workshops, as well as from each other in our team, and we hope to improve HoosYourFit and make it into a fully usable and marketable app in the future!

NOTE: Make sure you are using http and NOT https when accessing the website!

If you are still having difficulties, try another browser other than chrome.
