Inspiration
Reddit games are most powerful when they become a daily ritual, not a one-time novelty. We wanted to build a game that creates anticipation between sessions and lets the community influence what happens next. Hookline Legends was inspired by the idea of short, high-pressure daily runs with social competition and shared decision-making.
What it does
Hookline Legends is a daily route puzzle game built for Reddit communities. Players complete numbered nodes in sequence while avoiding moving hazards under a time limit. Each player gets limited daily attempts, earns streaks for returning, climbs a daily leaderboard, and votes on the next day’s mutator that changes game rules for everyone.
How we built it
We built Hookline Legends on Devvit Web with a client/server architecture. Phaser powers the interactive gameplay, scene transitions, hazard movement, and route interactions. Server endpoints handle run lifecycle, scoring validation, streak progression, leaderboard updates, and mutator voting. Redis stores per-post, per-day, and per-player game state. We used TypeScript end-to-end for shared API contracts and safer iteration.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a loop that is both fast for first-time players and deep enough for day-over-day retention was the biggest challenge. We also had to balance fairness and excitement in scoring, enforce daily limits cleanly, and keep everything within Devvit Web constraints. Another challenge was creating a polished mobile-friendly experience while maintaining responsive Phaser gameplay.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We shipped a complete end-to-end game loop with no core placeholders, including daily seeded runs, streak mechanics, daily cap pressure, leaderboard competition, and community mutator voting. We are especially proud of combining retention mechanics and social contribution into one coherent experience that feels native to Reddit communities.
What we learned
We learned that retention improves when short sessions still feel meaningful and when players can influence future content. We also learned that deterministic daily content plus social visibility creates stronger return behavior than pure one-off score chasing. On the technical side, shared typing across client/server reduced integration bugs significantly.
What's next for Hookline Legends
Next, we plan to add seasonal ladders, moderator-configurable events, flair-based progression badges, and expanded mutator sets. We also want richer community-generated challenge packs and stronger onboarding analytics to tune early-session clarity and long-term retention.
