Inspiration
We were inspired by the classic videogame The Oregon Trail. As UVA students, we wanted to put a collegiate twist on the original and create a videogame tailored to the college experience.
What it does
The game takes the perspective of a first-year college student, with the end goal being to make it to sophomore year. As the days move forward, the game presents you with various obstacles and challenges, in addition to mini-games that represent different actions a college student might take.
How we built it
We used Python to build this project. We were particularly reliant on the Pygame library, and were able to use the modules to create a working game.
Challenges we ran into
The Oregon Trail game itself consists of many different choices, each leading to a different screen, potentially with more choices. Due to the nature of the format we were inspired by, it was a challenge to account for the many different facets of the game that were required within the time frame. Going into the Hackathon, the team also had relatively rudimentary Python skills, and while this in itself presented a challenge, it was a good exercise.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of getting a working project, and increasing our familiarity with Python.
What we learned
We gained a lot of practice with Python as a language, as well as practice in game design.
