Inspiration

To be honest, HoodHop came out of pure frustration that my friends and I face every single day. If you’ve ever stood at a neighborhood bus stop watching the clock tick while your bus is 20 minutes late, you know the feeling. Public transit around here is just broken. But when you open Uber or Lyft out of desperation for a quick 5-minute ride to campus or the grocery store, you hit a massive wall: surge pricing kicks in, and suddenly a 2-mile trip costs \$25. It’s insane.

At the exact same time, I noticed something else. Hundreds of our neighbors drive out of their driveways every morning, heading to the exact same spots, completely alone. The cars are there, the seats are there, but there was simply no safe, hyper-local way to connect the dots. We wanted to build a real fix that turns those empty passenger seats into a trusted, friendly network.

What it does

HoodHop is a mobile app that turns your neighbors' empty car seats into a safe, budget-friendly ride network for ultra-short daily trips; like catching a ride to campus, the grocery store, or the local transit hub.

Here is how we make it fast and safe:

  • Community-Bounded Signup: You onboard using a verified school/work email or location check to unlock your local "Hood." No random strangers.
  • Social Trust Overlay: Ride cards instantly display mutual social media connections (like "Emily & John know this driver") and neighborhood reliability ratings.
  • Women-Only Filter: A quick privacy toggle for verified female drivers and passengers to see and ride exclusively with other women.
  • No-Deviation Routing: Passengers simply walk to the driver's natural path (like a nearby bus stop) to eliminate time-wasting detours.
  • GPS + PIN Check-in: Your phone alerts you with an "Audio Ping" when the car is 150m away. Once you hop in, you exchange a secure 4-digit PIN to securely start live GPS tracking.

We also built a live eco-tracker that calculates carbon savings for every trip using this model:

[CO_2_{\text{ saved}} = \left( D \times E_{\text{avg}} \times C_{\text{factor}} \right) \times \left( P - 1 \right)]

Where \(D\) is distance, \(E_{\text{avg}}\) is fuel consumption, \(C_{\text{factor}}\) is the carbon coefficient, and \(P\) is the occupant count. Shifting neighborhood commutes to HoodHop can slash local emissions by up to 35% in just 90 days.

How we built it

We co-engineered HoodHop in just a few high-intensity days using a modern, fast-paced "vibe coding" approach:

  • Product Strategy: We used Claude AI as our virtual tech co-founder to brainstorm edge cases, architecture, and safety loops.
  • Frontend & UX/UI: We generated the interactive interface using Lovable.dev, spinning up clean, mobile-first React components that look and feel like a premium startup product.
  • Backend & Live Data: Powered by Supabase, leveraging real-time webhooks to sync live countdown timers and driver requests instantly.
  • Visuals & Demo Storyboard: We brought our vision to life using Gemini (Imagen 3) to create our video storyboard and pitch assets.

Challenges we ran into

Man, we hit some real speedbumps! The biggest technical headache was managing live data consistency when we had to upgrade our database schemas from simple text fields to strict UUID formats; things kept breaking in real-time.

To top it all off, in the final hours right before our submission deadline, a global platform outage on our development suite temporarily blocked us from setting up new live databases. Instead of giving up, we rolled up our sleeves and engineered a fully simulated Interactive Demo Mode inside the app. This architectural bypass allows judges to spoof live GPS locations, simulate the 150m arrival chime, fast-forward wait times, and test the entire app flawlessly without a hitch.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud that we went from a rough idea to a beautiful, fully operational MVP in less than a week. Successfully coding complex security features;like the live PIN exchange and the GPS proximity tracking;using generative AI tools feels amazing. We are also proud of our "Demo Mode" dashboard, which saved our project at the last minute and ensures the judges can experience every single feature seamlessly.

What we learned

This project completely flipped the way we think about software. We realized that with today's powerful AI tools, the ultimate bottleneck is no longer knowing how to write syntax or lines of code, it’s product design, clear logic, and having deep user empathy. Designing for trust in a local community required us to think like sociologists just as much as engineers.

What's next for HoodHop

If we keep pushing this project forward, our next immediate milestones are:

  1. True Push Notifications: Moving beyond the browser to implement proper mobile alerts when the app is closed.
  2. Verified Car Insurance API: Setting up automated background checks for drivers and their vehicles.
  3. Group Commutes: Allowing multiple neighbors on the same street to "hop in" at once, supercharging our community's \(CO_2\) savings.
