Inspiration
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport engineering, speed, and design. As a passionate fan of racing and interactive web graphics, I wanted to capture that high-octane energy in a way a static 2D webpage never could. Inspired by Red Bull Racing's aerodynamic precision, bold livery, and championship legacy, this project was built to deliver that visceral "stop-scrolling and say Wow" moment directly inside a web browser.
What it does
Honoring Red Bull Racing is a fully interactive, real-time 3D web experience that puts the user up close and personal with F1-inspired aesthetics. Users can:
- Orbit & Inspect: Freely rotate, pan, and zoom in 360 degrees to appreciate the aerodynamic curves, textures, and race-ready geometry.
- Dynamic Lighting & Reflections: Experience responsive lighting, metallic/matte paint shaders, and realistic shadow rendering in real-time WebGL.
- Immersive Micro-interactions: Fluid animations and reactive camera transitions create a modern, futuristic showroom feel.
How we built it
- 3D Modeling & Scene Composition: Designed and assembled the core 3D assets, stage elements, and environment hierarchy using Spline 3D and Blender.
- Materials & Lighting: Tuned physically based rendering (PBR) materials to match Red Bull's signature matte dark navy, vibrant yellow, and race red tones, combined with custom studio HDRI maps and directional rim lights.
- Interactive State Machine: Integrated state transitions, hover effects, and responsive camera controllers natively within Spline's real-time engine.
- Web Export & Optimization: Exported the interactive scene directly to the web via WebGL/Spline runtime, optimizing polygon counts and texture draw calls for high-frame-rate performance across both desktop and mobile devices.
Challenges we ran into
- Performance vs. Visual Fidelity: Balancing high-detail models, realistic metallic shaders, and dynamic lighting while maintaining a smooth 60 FPS in the browser required careful polygon reduction and texture compression.
- Lighting Dynamics: Replicating the distinct, non-glossy matte look of the modern F1 livery under directional studio lights without blowing out the highlights.
- Mobile Responsiveness: Ensuring fluid touch controls (orbit/pinch-to-zoom) felt just as intuitive on mobile viewports as standard mouse controls on desktop.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Achieving buttery-smooth real-time rendering directly in the browser with zero external plugins.
- Nailing the cinematic ambiance, lighting contrast, and aerodynamic silhouette true to the spirit of Red Bull Racing.
- Crafting a clean, distraction-free 3D visual showcase that immediately immerses the viewer.
What we learned
- Deepened our understanding of real-time WebGL optimization techniques, draw-call management, and 3D web UX.
- Mastered advanced material node setups, procedural textures, and camera framing within Spline.
- Learned how to craft micro-interactions that make a 3D web asset feel alive rather than just a static CAD model.
What's next for Honoring F1 Racing
- Interactive Garage Experience: Adding interactive hotspots (telemetry data, tire compound choices, engine sound effects, and aero breakdown).
- Custom Livery Switcher: Introducing dynamic color/decal switching to showcase iconic liveries from different championship seasons.
- Audio Integration: Spatial 3D audio featuring the roar of the hybrid V6 turbo power unit as the user interacts with the car.
