Inspiration

Inspired by the game GeoGuessr, an online game where you are shown a random location on Google Street View and have to guess where in the world you are. It requires geographical knowledge and cultural awareness of different places.

What it does

The application asks players to click on the correct location for a given place name. There are two levels: the first focuses on district names, while the second mainly features tourist attractions. Players are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the locations and names in the Study page to achieve better results in the game. The app aims to promote local attractions and educate users about basic geographical knowledge of Hong Kong.

How we built it

As a person with almost no prior front-end and Javascript coding experience, I decided to use this opportunity to try agentic coding AI in helping me learn a language through creating. I gave Amazon Q a general idea of the application, and he is able to provide me not only the outcome, but also feedback to my request and explanations to the product. After a few rounds of conversations, I was able to understand the necessaries of making a Javascript web application, and I was able to take over the project and make more customized adjustments.

At the end with just 2 days, the web application is complete with it's basic features and matches my expectations, which is absolutely surprising.

Challenges we ran into

At first, the Amazon Q almost did everything for me. The product is looking nice but not what I was expecting, but since I am not familier with Javascript or HTML coding, I did not know how to make the app closer to my expectations, and I felt the project never belongs to my idea.

The breakpoint came when I tried to ask Amazon Q for explanations for the code. Everything was well explained that even for a person who has never touched Javascript like me can easily understand his idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that with the help of Amazon Q, I was able to learn and finish my first Javascript project with the efficiency I would never think of. I am proud that I made this first step that would probably change my learning and coding career.

What we learned

I learned the power of AI-assisted coding and its impact towards the programming industry. The AI is not only a good programmer, but also an assistant that can explain, examine, and correct human's code, so to help human programmers improve. The time and effort needed to master a language is not much less than days without Ai-assisted coding, and more people will be able to break the knwoledge barrier that used to stop them from creating anything extraordinary.

What's next for Hong Kong Placefinder Game

The current version of the HKPlace is definitely just the beginning. With more time, the app is going to include more locations, better UIUX, include more features like multiplayer, leaderboard and more game modes and levels.
