Inspiration
Like many couples, my partner and I often find ourselves locked in the age-old debate: “Who’s doing what around the house?” I realized that while love comes naturally, managing chores, schedules, and small conflicts? Not so much.
What frustrated me most was doing my part quietly, only to feel like it went unnoticed. When I tried to talk about it, it felt like keeping score — not exactly romantic. That’s when the idea for HoneyDo List was born: a playful, supportive app that helps couples share responsibilities, celebrate wins, and navigate conflicts — with humor and fairness.
What it does
HoneyDo List makes shared adulting... well, less of a chore. Couples can:
- Assign tasks and track who’s doing what 2.Share their mood (because we all have those days)
- Earn “Honey Points” for completed tasks — redeemable for fun rewards 4.Let Sunny, our AI conflict mediator, guide tough conversations
How we built it
We kicked things off with an idea and… a ChatGPT prompt. From there, it snowballed:
- Started refining the concept and user flow with ChatGPT, then moved to Bolt to actually bring HoneyDo List to life
- Integrated Supabase for authentication, database, and backend logic
- Quickly learned Bolt tokens are precious, so toggled between ChatGPT, Grok, and Bolt to hash out errors and save tokens
- Sketched a basic flow for how couples would navigate the app — focusing on making it feel simple and playful
- Once the core flow worked, added stats tracking for both partners — because we all like to see our contributions
- Polished the signup, invite emails, and password flows — thanks to Supabase Auth + Resend for smooth, branded emails
- Built the entire notification system in-house using Supabase Edge Functions and Web Push — after realizing Novu didn’t play nice with my stack
- Created a Reddit community for couples to share their stories and wins — building community beyond the app and a game link
- The Chore Report idea came straight from Eric’s email challenge to “make something cool in a single prompt” — spun that up at link as a fun, standalone on-ramp, viral entry point — no account needed, just humor, self-awareness, and a sharable report card.
- Planned to do a mobile build with EXPO, but ran into conflicts between EXPO and Novu — so pivoted to launching HoneyDo as a Progressive Web App, mobile-ready and live
This project was all about quick learning, scrappy problem-solving, and keeping the fun (and relationship sanity) front and center.
Challenges we ran into
Notifications nearly broke me! I started with Novu Inbox for in-app notifications and quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit — after burning way too much time (and tokens), I rebuilt the entire system using Supabase Edge Functions and browser push logic. Building conflict resolution with AI also took some finessing — ensuring couples could share their side separately and still feel heard was a delicate design challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Took HoneyDo List from idea to production-ready solo
- Integrated real-time notifications and AI conflict resolution
- Designed a fun, supportive experience — not just another task app
- Built the Chore Report to spark viral engagement and bring couples in playfully
- Bridged the gap between chores and connection — with humor!
What we learned
This was my first full solo build — I’m a Product Manager by trade, so walking through the entire design, development, and deployment process gave me a whole new respect for engineers and designers.
I also learned: The importance of humor in solving real relationship pain points How to wrangle AI to mediate (not escalate) couple conflicts That “small” features like push notifications are... never small
What's next for HoneyDo List
- Launch the Chore Report publicly as a fun, low-barrier viral too
- Build and grow a playful, supportive HoneyDo community — because relationships thrive on connection, not just checklists - link
- Add more AI-powered relationship tools (think shared goals, reminders, maybe even date night suggestions)
