Project Background: Honest4
Inspiration
The project was inspired by the growing need for transparency, trust, and fact-checking in digital media and web browsing[cite: 1]. With an influx of biased information, misinformation, and altered visuals online, the creators wanted a tool that acts as an independent layer of verification right in the browser, helping users keep grounded with real facts[cite: 1].
How It Was Built
Honest4 was architected as a full-stack browser extension ecosystem[cite: 1]:
- Frontend Extension: Built using standard web extension architecture, including a manifest, background scripts, and content scripts to interact directly with web pages[cite: 1].
- Backend Server: Powered by a Node.js/JavaScript agent structure paired with a specialized Vision-Language Model engine to process and evaluate visual and textual web content[cite: 1].
- Styling & Testing: Styled with custom CSS and integrated with preview test files to streamline user experience and debugging during development[cite: 1].
Challenges Faced
- Real-time Web Integration: Seamlessly injecting content scripts to analyze page data without disrupting the user's browsing performance[cite: 1].
- Multimodal Processing: Bridging the gap between the browser extension frontend and the heavy backend VLM engine to handle complex visual-textual analysis efficiently[cite: 1].
- Hackathon Time Constraints: Rapidly prototyping, testing, and packaging a multi-component system (extension plus server agent) within a tight schedule[cite: 1].
What We Learned
- Gained deep experience in building cross-component browser extensions that communicate with custom backend agent servers[cite: 1].
- Learned how to effectively harness Vision-Language Models for practical real-world content analysis and verification tasks[cite: 1].
- Mastered rapid prototyping workflows for hackathons, balancing core functionality with a clean user pitch[cite: 1].
