Inspiration

Student flats don’t break over big drama — they break over tiny things: who cleaned the bathroom, who still owes money for Friday dinner, whose cousin is sleeping on the sofa, and who needs silence for finals. Every fight starts the same way: a WhatsApp message that half the flat ignores.

We wanted an app that removes that friction. Not another generic to-do list — a shared flat board where:

  • chores have photo proof and roommates approve or dispute with a reason
  • absences, quiet/exam days, and visits live on the flat calendar (not in chat)
  • the app reassigns / rotates tasks around who is actually home
  • money reminders are automatic — if someone doesn’t pay, they get nudged; if they mark “I paid”, the creditor gets an alert that opens the expense to settle

Less “did you see my message?” — more “it’s already on the calendar.”

What it does

  • Tasks: assign (or auto-rotate), swap, complete with proof, approve / dispute
  • Proof settings: if the flat sets photo required, you cannot skip the photo; if optional, camera / gallery / complete without
  • Expenses: splits, “you owe / they owe you”, settle flow with payment confirmation alerts
  • Feed: flat health, weekly reputation leaderboard, balances
  • Agenda + Flat life: calendar, absences, quiet mode (exams), visits, house rules — add once, everyone sees it
  • Alerts inbox: overdue, review, approved, disputed, you-owe, settle-request, quiet, roommate returns, visits
  • HOMPANY Plus (RevenueCat): optional Plus — find flats and roommates more easily, and know who you’re really moving in with thanks to the reputation you build in the app; core flat tools stay free

How we built it

  • React Native + Expo Router + TypeScript
  • Supabase (Postgres, Auth, RLS by home_id, Storage)
  • RevenueCat for optional Plus later
  • NativeWind, Zod, Jest, full ES/EN i18n
npm install
npm run db:start && npm run db:reset
npm start

Challenges we ran into

Multi-tenant RLS so one flat never leaks into another; a real task lifecycle (PENDING → SUBMITTED → COMPLETED / disputed); recurring chores that respect absences; and proving RevenueCat in a Shipaton demo without locking the free roommate experience. On top of that, recurrence had to feel as simple as possible for the user (few taps, clear days) while still being practical, functional, and realistic for a real flat — weekly chores, monthly bills, and one-off plans that still make sense when someone is away or in quiet/exam mode.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building something by students, for students — the everyday friction of shared living, not a generic productivity tool
  • Keeping almost all of the useful features free: tasks, expenses, calendar, alerts, and reputation stay available to the whole flat
  • Turning a real problem (“did you see my WhatsApp?”) into a shared board with photo proof, clear debts, and a calendar everyone can trust
  • Making recurring chores feel simple on the outside while still working like a real house schedule

What we learned

I learned that shipping a first app is less about knowing every tool and more about listening to the daily mess of living with people. Small copy, clear screens, and one idea at a time beat a complicated system nobody opens. I also learned to cut features when they made the flat harder — and to keep asking: would I actually use this with my roommates next week?

What's next for Hompany

Next I want to grow reputation into something you can trust when you look for a flat — so students can find homes and roommates more easily, and know a bit about who they’re about to share with before they move in.
