Inspiration

Topic 3: Sustainability for the general population. Smart home systems with extensive automation, sensing, and remote capabilities, can offer a lot of environmental benefits. Not only can it make your home more efficient by decreasing your carbon footprint but can also save you money while doing so. However, only 14% of smart homeowners in the United States and Canada consider the sustainability aspect because they are unaware of its benefits.

What it does

Make your Home your Homie! Homie Helper takes all the guesswork out of your green smart home decisions. Tag along with your homie as you earn badges and rewards for choosing between energy saving options. Compete with your neighbors to see who the true Nature Warrior can be.

How we built it

We interviewed smart homeowners on their relationship with sustainability in their smart homes. After the initial research multiple different prototypes were created before a final was created in React.

Challenges we ran into

A lot of react cooperation issues with bootstrap to implement a dynamic user friendly interface. Lack of time to go in depth into our feature implementations to really elevate our project to a higher level.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of our major objectives for this project was to make sustainable living fun for the general population. We achieved this by gamifying all the boring aspects of educating people of the green aspects of the smart home lifestyle. We are also very proud of our user interface design which was built using hand drawn pixel art using Aseprite & Figma.

What we learned

We learned more about user interface patterns and designs. Got more familiar with react, html, JavaScript and bootstrap frameworks. We also gained valuable experience in project planning and time management.

What's next for HOMIE HELPER

Integration with Home Assistant to allow for compatibility with all major smart home devices. This also allows for strong AI generated routines and optimizations. Collaboration with major companies to provide a greater incentive for future smart homeowners.
