Inspiration

Social media is largely a passive experience with negative social consequences.

What if, instead of being built for passive consumption, it was built for making us become who we want to be?

What if, instead of sitting at home on the couch to consume, we left our houses and engaged with the real world instead?

What if it only involved our friends?

What it does

Homework for your friends gives daily challenges for your friends to accomplish, to make sure everyone stays connected and takes time to do something memorable with each other.

It also (optionally) allows you to challenge yourself to learn something new over the course of 30 days, via daily challenges.

How we built it

Used an LLM and coding Agents to build the first iteration. Shared an iOS build with the family to give ourselves challenges, and a chance to dogfood the app.

Installed uses tracking with Posthog to have a data capture and analytics platform for queries and tracking usage.

Uses Gemini LLMs and image generation to help write your challenges to yourself.

Agents powered by Gemini are used to track adherence to your goals, with prompts to get you back on track, if you miss a day.

Agents also find long tail niches for people who want to accomplish goals, but are gated by human review. These reviewed packs can then drive app installs (and are free!).

Challenges we ran into

How to approach gamification and engagement, while still looking to make interesting challenges.

Also, there is a lot of overhead in delivering an app to the app store. We're currently still in review.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Saw the hackathon late, started 3 weeks ago. Still managed to ship the full iPhone app, set of Gemini powered Agents, and a marketing site that automatically generates new niches for generated challenges, subject to human review.

What we learned

You can do a lot in a short amount of time!

What's next for homework for your friends

Iterating now that the (artificial) pressure to deliver something is done.
