Inspiration
As a homeowner, I grew frustrated juggling multiple warranty plans—missing expiration dates, fumbling for claim info, and losing track of repair records. I knew other homeowners faced the same hassle, so I set out to build a tool that centralizes all this critical info in a clear, easy-to-use dashboard.
What it does
HomeWarranty Tracker is a web app that lets homeowners track warranty coverage for home systems/appliances, monitor expiration dates with timely alerts, access step-by-step claim guidance, review repair history, and get unbiased renewal recommendations—all from a single, intuitive dashboard.
How we built it
I started by mapping core user needs (like expiration tracking and claim guidance) to define the dashboard structure. I used React for the front-end to build card-based UI components, PostgreSQL to store warranty/repair data, and Chart.js to visualize key stats. AWS hosted the app, with date-fns handling expiration rule logic (30/15/7-day alerts).
Challenges we ran into
Calibrating the expiration status logic (Active/Expiring Soon/Expired) to align with real-world date edge cases was tricky—e.g., accounting for leap years and time zone differences. Also, designing the repair history search/filter to be intuitive while handling large datasets required iterative UI testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The color-coded status badges and chronological expiration alerts make at-a-glance monitoring seamless. Users consistently note the claim guidance section eliminates the stress of filing claims, and the renewal suggestions feel personalized (not salesy)—that’s exactly what I aimed for.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of translating business rules (like expiration warnings) into clean, maintainable code. I also learned the value of user-centric design—simplifying complex warranty jargon into clear, actionable language was more impactful than technical feature-building.
What's next for this project
First, add the ability to edit/add/delete warranty records (top user request). Then, integrate email reminders for expirations, build a mobile-responsive version, and add a provider comparison tool to help homeowners make informed renewal choices. Eventually, I hope to connect with warranty providers for direct data sync to reduce manual entry.
