Inspiration
As someone who’s renovated multiple rental spaces and felt overwhelmed by endless design options, I wanted to create a tool that simplifies finding your home style—no design degree required. I noticed friends and family struggled with the same decision fatigue, so I set out to build a quick, intuitive quiz that cuts through the noise.
What it does
HomeStyle Quiz guides users through 8-12 lifestyle/visual questions to identify their primary + secondary interior styles (Minimalist, Scandinavian, Boho, etc.). It delivers personalized style profiles with color palettes, material/furniture suggestions, a curated inspiration gallery, and budget-tiered shopping links.
How we built it
I started by mapping quiz questions to weighted style categories, then built the frontend with React/Bootstrap for responsiveness. I used LocalStorage to store quiz progress/results (no login needed!) and integrated retail/image APIs for product/inspiration pages. The design prioritized speed—ensuring the quiz takes <3 mins to complete.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing quiz length (short enough to finish quickly, long enough to be accurate) was tricky—we tested 8-12 questions to strike the right balance. Also, ensuring image loading was smooth across devices required optimizing assets and adding placeholder logic for failed loads.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a fully responsive experience that feels seamless on mobile/desktop, and building a style-matching logic that consistently delivers accurate, actionable results. Users love the budget-tiered shopping list—no generic recommendations, just style-fit products at their price point.
What we learned
User testing taught us that simplicity is key: we removed complex navigation and streamlined the quiz flow after early testers found it overwhelming. We also learned how to optimize session storage to maintain progress without requiring accounts.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand style categories (adding Mid-Century Modern, Eclectic), integrate room-specific design tools, and partner with more retailers for wider product coverage. We’re also exploring adding a "save your style profile" feature (via email, no account needed) for long-term access.
