Inspiration
Most homeowners are familiar with the "mental list" of household tasks—cleaning the gutters, checking the boiler, winterizing faucets. It is a chaotic list that lives rent-free in your head for months, usually until something breaks down completely in the most inconvenient and expensive way possible. We wanted to build a solution that shifts home management from a stressful, reactive struggle to a smart, proactive routine, saving homeowners thousands of dollars in emergency repair bills.
What it does
Homerockr is an all-in-one home maintenance and property tracking application available on iOS and Android. The platform completely centralizes property management through a suite of intuitive tools:
- Smart Maintenance Planner: Tracks routine chores with a built-in library of over 70 pre-made seasonal templates, recurrence scheduling, and family delegation.
- 10-Minute Guided Walkthroughs: Step-by-step rapid digital inspections covering the roof, exterior facade, garage, and interior spaces to catch hidden damage early.
- Home Value Retention Index: A gamified fitness-tracker style score from 0 to 100 that rates overall upkeep based on completed vs. overdue tasks.
- Renovation & Project Planner: A dedicated roadmap to log, budget, and track long-term home improvement and remodeling milestones years in advance.
How I built it
The core application was built using a cross-platform mobile architecture to seamlessly target both iOS and Android users from a single codebase. The backend handles real-time task synchronization, recurring notification schedules, and aggregates data vectors to dynamically recalculate the Home Value Retention Index score based on a proprietary weightage formula for completed chores.
Challenges I ran into
One of the main challenges was abstracting the complex, highly specific world of preventative home maintenance into an intuitive UI. Condensing hundreds of different household systems into a 10-minute guided inspection flow without overwhelming the user required multiple design iterations. Additionally, crafting the algorithmic scoring mechanism for the Value Retention Index required careful balancing to ensure the numerical feedback felt accurate and genuinely motivational.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We succeeded in taking a tedious, real-world chore and making it feel uniquely engaging. Seeing the core task engine dynamically sync across multiple family devices flawlessly was a massive milestone. We are also proud of the visual clarity of the status indicators and the 70+ built-in template libraries, which completely remove the friction of getting started for new homeowners.
What I learned
Building Homerockr highlighted just how universally stressful home ownership can be, but more importantly, how much people appreciate small, gamified milestones. We learned that deep, automated personalization is key; users don't just want a generic checklist, they want a tailored care plan specific to their property’s unique layout and climate needs.
What's next for Homerockr
We plan to introduce automated weather-alert integrations that dynamically inject localized upkeep tasks—like prepping your yard before an unseasonal freeze or inspecting your roof after a heavy storm. We are also exploring localized contractor integrations so that users can tap directly on a failed task or a walkthrough issue to immediately hire a verified professional.
