Why we built it

A repair appointment can move at the last minute. A reminder that says “someone needs to be home” does not establish who agreed to take responsibility. HomeRelay is a simulated Alexa+ household experience that turns that loose request into a reviewable handoff.

How it works

The owner enters the changed task. Amazon Nova Lite, invoked through a scoped AWS Bedrock Lambda, uses bounded tools to read the task and synthetic availability and to propose an available adult. The model can propose only; it cannot approve or accept. The owner reviews and approves the exact version, and the recipient separately accepts it. Editing or revoking invalidates the previous approval. Private notes stay out of the shared view and model context. An audit trail records the transitions.

How we built it

React and Sites host the interface; Cloudflare D1 stores versioned state; Bedrock Converse runs Nova Lite with get_task, list_availability, and propose_handoff tools. The repository includes the full source, setup instructions, tests, and a sanitized live tool trace. Six policy tests and two HTTP checks pass. A fresh hosted-browser run on October 2 invoked the live Bedrock planner, then completed simulated owner approval and recipient acceptance. A separate development-authored set of 20 paraphrases over one fixed synthetic availability scenario passed 20/20; this is not a held-out benchmark or real-household accuracy estimate.

What we learned

The hard boundary is between a model suggestion and a human commitment. We made approval version-specific, kept acceptance separate, and preserved uncertainty after edits. Nova Lite initially rejected an unsupported tool-schema keyword and later required tool-result JSON to be an object; the fixes and requested documentation improvements are in FRICTION.md.

Scope

This is the hackathon’s simulated Alexa+ web-app path. Both role controls live inside one private simulation and calendars are synthetic. There is no Alexa hardware, independent adult authentication, real calendar, message sending, or task-completion claim. A production version would add those integrations while keeping human approval and acceptance explicit.
