Inspiration

The outbreak of deadly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on the way we perceive our world and our everyday lives. The patterns of transmission and the alarming rate of contamination threaten the world. It is a human tendency to find peace in other companies, but the safety measures put in place to stop the spread of the virus require social distancing. People suffering from diseases like cancer, diabetes, respiratory disorders, and others require special care and attention during this crucial time, and caring for someone with these disorders has become even more critical. The person may be at a higher risk of infection because cancer and other treatments often weaken their immune systems.

Due to the increased risk of exposure to the virus by going out in public, most hospitals and clinics have changed their visitation policies. Some may allow one visitor per patient, and others may allow no visitors. Timely review of patient data with close to real-time feedback is a critical success factor in today’s disease management. The development of a bidirectional automatic monitoring gateway would function as an interface between the patient and doctors This solution will considerably reduce the need of patients to visit hospitals and thus lower the risk of infection. Also, self-monitoring of the patients will relieve the family from constant contact from the Corona patient.

What it does

As our hospitals and medical organizations are filled at their maximum capacities, the government should advocate home isolation and medical care. But due to the highly infectious nature of the virus, the patient of diseases like cancer, diabetes, and suspected corona carrying victims need to be isolated completely. Thus, here is a one-stop solution to the above problem. The development of a bidirectional automatic monitoring gateway would function as an interface between the patient and doctors.

How it works

HomeQuarantine-SelfIsolation focusses on the three H’s which are of prime importance-

  1. Home (self-isolation at the family level)

  2. The healthcare service provider (linking patient and medical support)

  3. Hospitals (24*7 virtual supervision)

It is an effective and secure tool to wirelessly transfer data from different measurement devices to the health care service provider by using a mobile platform. The system consists of a mobile platform, which collects the information from the measuring devices, and a server platform, which receives the collected data and forwards them to hospitals which helps in the regular monitoring of the patients.

Challenges I ran into

Bluetooth enabled data transfer was quite a challenge, as it had little privacy concerns as well. But overall, it was effective in isolating the patient at the ease of his home.

What's next for HomeQuarantine

Timely review of patient data with close to real-time feedback is a critical success factor in today’s disease management. This solution will considerably reduce the need for patients to visit hospitals and thus lower the risk of infection. Also, self-monitoring of the patients will relieve the family from constant contact from the Corona patient. We want to collaborate with our state government for transforming this idea into real cases for the hospitals.
