Inspiration
HomePrint began in the BUS233a • Entrepreneurship and Rapid Prototyping course in the Brandeis International Business School. Our team was inspired to start HomePrint through combining interests in real estate, construction, 3D printing, innovation, and a desire to create alternative housing solutions in response to widespread housing shortages.
What it does
HomePrint uses 3D printing construction methods to build Accessory Dwelling Units on existing properties. By utilizing 3D printing methods, HomePrint is able to construct ADUs with a faster timeline, lower cost, and more eco-friendly impact than traditional construction methods. Since 3D printing uses an extruder to lay foundation, 3D printing construction methods produces net-zero offcuts. Once built, ADUs can benefit both homeowners and those seeking housing. For homeowners, an ADU can increase a home's value by up to 35%. The ADU space can be used as additional office/gym space, space for family members, or rented out for additional income.
How we built it
Utilizing the Lean Start up method, HomePrint has undergone a series of surveys and prototyping. We have gathered data to support our hypotheses, and used the data to further build our business plan. Our team has prototyped physical 3D printed ADUs, and has secured equipment to move into testing with printing in other mediums.
Challenges we ran into
Building domain expertise has been a challenge, as 3D printing construction methods are fairly new. However, through perseverance and dedication to research, the team has been working towards building as much domain expertise as possible.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a full business plan, profit formula, technology and operations plan, and a full analysis of the both 3D construction printing sector and ADU sector. The team now has significant knowledge in a multitude of spheres, which equips us well to move forward with HomePrint.
What we learned
The team has made large strides in learning about 3D printing. All team members have learned how to operate 3D printing machines, as well as how to utilize software to build 3D models for print.
What's next for HomePrint
HomePrint will continue developing our business through ideation, continuation of prototyping and testing, and dedication to research.
