Inspiration
Smart homes are becoming more common, but automating everyday tasks safely and reliably remains a challenge. We wanted to build an AI-powered assistant that does more than simply execute commands. It should understand a request, check for potential risks, and help ensure actions are carried out safely.
What it does
HomePilot AI is a safety-first smart home automation assistant. It processes user requests, evaluates actions using safety checks, and coordinates workflows before execution. Our goal is to make smart home automation more intelligent, dependable, and user-friendly.
How we built it
We built a working prototype using web-based development tools and implemented tool-based logic, safety validation, and automated tests. We also created sample scenarios to demonstrate how the system handles different requests and verifies actions before considering them complete.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making automation both useful and safe. We needed to ensure that actions were validated instead of blindly executed and that the system handled different scenarios consistently. Testing each scenario helped us identify issues and improve reliability.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have built a working prototype of HomePilot AI, a safety-first smart home automation assistant. We successfully implemented tool-based logic, safety checks, and automated tests, and demonstrated the system through three working sample scenarios. We are especially proud that our project focuses not only on automation but also on reliability, responsible execution, and user safety. This experience helped us turn an idea into a functional prototype and gave us valuable hands-on experience with AI agents and software development.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned about AI-assisted workflows, tool integration, safety checks, and automated testing. We also learned that a successful AI agent needs more than intelligence—it needs clear boundaries, predictable behavior, and reliable validation.
What's next for HomePilot AI
We aim to expand HomePilot AI with real smart-home integrations, stronger safety mechanisms, and more advanced automation workflows, while keeping user control and reliability at the center of the experience.
