Inspiration
We were inspired by the real-life challenges faced by people who live alone, as well as families who often have to leave their loved ones at home due to busy schedules. Safety and care become pressing concerns in these situations—especially for elderly family members, children, or individuals with health conditions.
To address this, we built a system with two main components: Home Surveillance → Focused on overall home security, including fire detection and monitoring unusual activity. Monitor Me → A personal care module that observes the individual, tracking their activities, sudden movements, and providing an emergency system for accidents or unusual situations.
What We Learned
Building this project taught us: ~How technology can be applied to real-world social problems. ~The importance of combining multiple domains—from AI and computer vision to system integration and human-centered design. ~That innovation is not just about cool features, but about making lives better.
How We Built It
System Architecture: Designed a centralized dashboard to manage both modules.
AI Modules: Implemented motion detection, fire detection, fall detection, and monitoring features using computer vision.
Frontend: Built a responsive dashboard with Tailwind CSS.
Backend: Used Flask to handle API routes, event logging, and communication with AI modules.
Streaming: Integrated MJPEG camera feeds for real-time monitoring.
Notifications: Set up emergency alerts to notify family members instantly.
Integration: Connecting multiple systems (AI, frontend, backend, streaming) into one seamless platform.
Performance: Optimizing real-time video analysis while ensuring smooth performance.
User-Centered Design: Balancing technical complexity with ease of use for non-technical users.
Reliability: Ensuring the system is dependable in real-world conditions.
Social Impact
This project goes beyond technology—it is about peace of mind. Home Surveillance ensures the household remains safe from fire hazards or unusual activities. Monitor Me ensures personal safety by detecting accidents, sudden movements, or emergencies. By providing a smart, reliable, and caring system, we aim to reduce anxiety for people living alone and for families separated by busy schedules. It represents how AI can be used for good, ensuring safety, well-being, and stronger human connection.
