Inspiration
The inspiration came from realizing that those who are homeless do not have the opportunity to spend hours of time on the the internet for resources. By compiling helpful information to better their situation and creating locators for finding shelter and supplies, it will be more widely available for those who are homeless to get help. The idea was to make it possible for those who are homeless to go to one website at a library or other public space and find everything they need in less than an hour.
What it does
Hope Connection is a website that contains locators for shelter and supplies, as well as helpful information on how those who are homeless can better their situation. By entering their current location in the locators, they will be able to find shelters or other safe spaces to stay and basic necessities such as, food, toiletries, and clothing. The information provided will give them an idea of how start improving their situation.
How I built it
Hope Connection was built using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Bootstrap. It took around 24 hours to create the website. I had to learn how to use Bootstrap in order to create the website.
Challenges I ran into
The challenges that I ran into were learning how to use Bootstrap, hosting and coding the website, and working for almost all of the 24 hours.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am most proud that I was able to make something within the 24 hours and have it run correctly and look well designed.
What I learned
During this hackathon, I was able to improve my knowledge on web development and Bootstrap.
What's next for Hope Connection
Get the back end of the website fully running. Create a text to speech function so that the website will be accessible to all people. Create a contact form to report abuse or maltreatment in a shelter or other organization. Create a locator for clinics and other health services. Create a search for what financial aid and other benefit programs would best fit their situation. Add more information and categories in the getting help section.
