Being from Seattle, I've seen my fair share of the homeless. I grew up incredibly privileged and never really understood what it meant to be homeless. However, after traveling and talking to more and more homeless people, I've learned more about homelessness, and I've become much more understanding of their position. So I was inspired to help those that have taught me so much about myself.
What it does
It's a simple website where homeless people can search for affordable housing and also have access to resources to find jobs, get help with mental problems, and housing assistance.
How I built it
I built the website in HTML, while I scrapped different affordable housing websites through the BeautifulSoup library in Python. Also, I'm using Flask to run the web server.
Challenges I ran into
A few of the challenges I faced where finding good resources about homelessness and dealing with the poor design in websites I scrapped.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I think I built something useful and learned a lot about the homeless and homelessness during this project.
What I learned
Besides learning how to connect Python code and HTML, I learned a lot about how homelessness is less about being complacent and lazy, but more about the challenges they face every day which makes it much more difficult to get out of their current situation. Also, everyone has a different story, and one solution can help everyone's issues.
What's next for Homeless Help
I want to parse through additional websites eventually, have a better overall design for the site, and provide more resources and features.
