Inspiration
I wanted full control over my hardware, data, and infrastructure. I wanted an environment where I can run, inspect, and analyze anything with whatever tooling I want or need, without depending on cloud providers, their pricing, quotas, or platform decisions.
What it does
homelab-infra is the infrastructure behind my personal homelab. It runs my self-hosted services and provides a playground for experimenting with infrastructure, networking, security, automation, observability, and new technologies.
How I built it
I built the homelab around infrastructure-as-code and automation, with configuration stored and versioned in Git. Changes go through pull requests with automated security checks and AI-assisted PR reviews. Updates and dependency maintenance are automated wherever possible, reducing manual work while keeping the environment secure and up to date.
Challenges I ran into
Networking, security, hardware limitations, and keeping everything reproducible were some of the biggest challenges. Automating updates without sacrificing stability and debugging issues across multiple infrastructure layers taught me a lot.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud that the homelab evolved from experiments into infrastructure that is automated, maintainable, secure, and reproducible. I can experiment freely while still applying practices I would expect from a production environment.
What I learned
Owning the entire stack changes how you understand infrastructure. I learned much more about networking, automation, security, observability, failure modes, and the trade-offs hidden behind managed cloud services.
What's next for homelab-infra
I want to push automation even further, improve observability, backups, security, and disaster recovery, and continue experimenting with AI-assisted operations and infrastructure tooling - all while keeping control of the hardware and data.
