Inspiration
I wanted the Garage Door that was installed in my house to be smarter and also HomeKit compatible, so I thought how I could implement this.
How it works
For the HomeKit node, I used a Raspberry Pi. The Garage Door is controlled by a relay which is connected to the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi receives a command from Siri or the HomeKit app, which triggers the relay to open/close the garage.
Challenges I ran into
I had issues in implementing a HomeKit server. I later found a Node.JS based server called HAP-NodeJS on GitHub. I modified the existing code to suit my needs and haven't come across any issues yet.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud of my exposure to Javascript and Node.JS as well as the simplicity and ease of use.
What I learned
I learned how HomeKit and Node.JS work. This exposure allows me to build future projects with IoT compatibility.
What's next for HomeKit Garage
I am currently working on how to implement a door sensor to return data to the iOS device. This would allow the user to also know if the garage is currently open or closed.
