Inspiration

Inspiration Households often deal with avoidable problems: forgotten maintenance, expired warranties, missing emergency supplies, and confusion during urgent situations. Most people do not have a simple way to track their home’s condition and get timely, personalized guidance.

We were inspired to build HomeGuard AI, an Alexa+ powered home-maintenance and safety copilot that helps families prevent small issues from becoming expensive or dangerous problems.

What it does

HomeGuard AI helps households:

Track home appliances, systems, and important items

Identify overdue or upcoming maintenance

Manage warranties and purchase details

Prepare emergency kits and safety checklists

Receive guidance during home emergencies

Generate weekly home-health reports

Coordinate family response during urgent situations

Users can interact through Alexa+ using natural questions such as:

“What maintenance is due this month?”

“When does my refrigerator warranty expire?”

“What should I do during a power outage?”

“Generate my weekly home report.”

How we built it

We built HomeGuard AI as a voice- and web-enabled assistant powered by Alexa+ and a self-hosted MCP server.

The system uses:

Alexa+ for conversational voice interactions

Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect Alexa+ with HomeGuard’s household tools and data

Amazon Bedrock for AI-generated reports, maintenance guidance, and emergency assistance

FastAPI / Python for backend services and MCP tool implementation

SQLite for lightweight local household data storage

Next.js / React for the web dashboard

AWS services for cloud integration and deployment-ready architecture

The core flow is:

A user adds household items, appliances, warranties, and maintenance schedules.

The MCP server exposes tools for retrieving, updating, and analyzing household data.

Alexa+ understands the user’s request and calls the appropriate MCP tool.

Amazon Bedrock generates clear, contextual guidance or reports.

The web dashboard displays household status, upcoming maintenance, and emergency readiness.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was making Alexa+ reliably call the correct MCP tool based on a user’s natural-language request. We improved this by designing clear tool descriptions, consistent input schemas, and focused tool responsibilities.

Another challenge was handling incomplete household data. Users may not know every appliance detail, warranty date, or maintenance interval. We designed the system to work with partial information while still providing useful reminders and safety recommendations.

We also focused on making emergency guidance practical rather than generic. Instead of simply returning broad advice, HomeGuard AI uses the household’s stored context—such as available supplies, important contacts, and item details—to provide more relevant next steps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working Alexa+ MCP integration for household management.

Created a complete household-data model covering appliances, warranties, maintenance, and emergency readiness.

Enabled natural-language voice interactions for maintenance and emergency scenarios.

Integrated Amazon Bedrock for intelligent reports and guidance.

Built a dashboard that gives families a clear view of their home’s status.

Designed the project to run without requiring physical smart-home hardware.

What we learned

We learned how to design an MCP-based architecture that connects conversational AI with real application data. We also learned the importance of clear tool design, reliable state management, and user-friendly responses in voice-first applications.

Most importantly, we learned that preventive home care becomes much easier when households have one assistant that understands their home, remembers important dates, and provides actionable guidance.

What's next for HomeGuard

Next, I plan to add:

Smart-home device integrations

Automated maintenance reminders through Alexa routines

Receipt and warranty document scanning

Family member profiles and shared household access

Local emergency-alert integration

More detailed home-risk and insurance-readiness reports
