Inspiration

The food we eat plays a bigger role in our carbon footprint than one might think. The logistics behind transporting food across the world generates quite a significant amount of carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the mega-grocers behind a lot of these operations are over-eager to raise prices and in turn raise profits.

What if we could avoid all of that? Avoid the carbon emissions and mega corporations while not compromising.

What if we could do all of that while prioritizing sustainability, community and health.

Introducing homegrown, our team's submission for nwHacks 2024.

What is homegrown?

homegrown is a full-circle solution which aims to take us back to a time when the food we ate came from the places we lived, through the power of technology.

It’s a platform that enables local farmers to market their produce to local communities and takes the mega-corporations and conglomerates out of the picture.

Users can are provided an intuitive interface to find nearby farms and order their produce to be delivered to them on a weekly basis.

Demo

How we built homegrown

Tech stack homegrown's front end was built with React, Sass, Three.js, and the mapbox API. We utilized all these technologies to build a map with pleasing and responsive 3D visuals to act as markers for local farms/markets.

The backend was built with Flask and Firebase which provided a solid foundation for rapid prototyping and iteration, but also provided an easy path to scale up.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of just how much we were able to develop despite how new we were to a lot of the libraries and APIs. We really tried to pay attention to the little things and make things feel as polished as possible while still delivering on our core functionality.

What we learned

For some of us this was our first in-person hackathon after many years spent online due to COVID. It was really interesting to see how collaboration changed when we were all together.

For others this was our first experience with react and other libraries and was overall a very difficult but very rewarding trial by fire.

What's next for homegrown

There's a lot more we wanted to add, AI recipe generation based on the items you've ordered, recommendations for in-season produce, and news-articles or blog posts about the local farms. However, these all had to be overlooked due to time constraints.

Overall, we're really proud of our idea and its emphasis on how we can reduce our carbon footprint while supporting local! We really hope that we can one day we can build a more feature-rich and polished version with the ability to scale!
