Inspiration

We are seeing an increasing amount of people becoming homeless around Calgary, for multiple different reasons. So we are inspired to create a solution to help that problem. Shelters are overcrowded, and many homeless people have real skills that go unseen. We wanted a practical way to connect them to opportunities.

What it does

Our project provides connection between businesses and homeless people who are in need of support to get up on their feet and work for jobs tailoring to their skills. We have created a platform for employers to help homeless people without a job to be employed. Employers can see the people that are register in the homeless shelter in their area, view the homeless people portfolio and make a request to contact the shelter to get in touch with the homeless people about their jobs

How we built it

We built a web platform using Next.js, Firebase, and Firestore, with search, filtering, and a map based discovery page that is tied to homeless shelters and homeless people with their interest of skills that can fill the role in businesses. Using Javascript as our main programming language and we are using authentication and database services provided by Firebase

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we have faced is mostly due to getting this project completed and have it deployed within the span of 24 hours. Gave us a great challenge on how we need to minimize the scope of the features, design and database.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we successfully completed the main objective of our project in a short amount of time. This is also our first hackathon which gives us a rewarding feeling of accomplishing the task.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate Firebase with a Next.js application, manage authentication, and structure a full-stack web application project. We also gained experience working as a team and debugging backend issues. We also learned that it takes major determination and strategic methods to figure out how to implement the project in a short period. We have also learned about homeless shelters, how these residents live, and how concerning it can be when shelters are at its max capacity during our research.

What's next for HomeFull

Our next steps for our project is to expand and give insights to people and businesses on how capably skilled homeless people can be when doing the right job. We can try to make the design more attractive for users to use, while creating functionalities for better security and better convenient to use.
