Inspiration

As a 30-something professional tired of vague savings trackers, I wanted a tool that spoke to first-time homebuyers like me—no jargon, no login, just clear, actionable insights for reaching a down payment goal. Watching friends struggle to navigate savings accounts and assistance programs sparked the idea to bundle these needs into one intuitive app.

What it does

HomeDownPayment Tracker lets users pick their city and property type to get a tailored down payment goal, track monthly savings progress with visual dashboards, see how long it’ll take to reach the goal, and explore high-yield savings accounts or location-specific assistance programs—all designed for real-world housing markets.

How we built it

I started by mapping core user needs (goal-setting, progress tracking, resource discovery) to a minimalist UI. Used HTML/CSS/Bootstrap for responsive design, JavaScript for financial logic (e.g., $progress = (CurrentSaved / TotalGoal) × 100$), Chart.js for monthly savings charts, and JSON to structure location/account/program data for seamless filtering.

Challenges we ran into

Calibrating the timeline projection logic to handle edge cases (e.g., over-saving) without clunky messaging was tough. Also, ensuring the location filter for assistance programs worked smoothly across U.S. and European cities required rigorous testing of geographic data mapping.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a tool that’s truly user-centric—no login, instant load, and design that prioritizes clarity over complexity. The progress bar and timeline feature feel intuitive, and users consistently say the assistance program search saves them hours of research.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of financial UX—how to present numbers in a non-intimidating way—and learned to balance feature depth with simplicity. I also gained insight into regional housing market nuances (U.S. vs. Europe) that shaped the tool’s city/property type logic.

What's next for this project

I plan to add more granular savings planning (e.g., adjusting for annual raises), expand the assistance program database to include more regional options, and integrate personalized savings tips based on user progress. Eventually, I want to add mobile optimization for on-the-go tracking.
