Inspiration

With all of the hardships going on in the world today, we wanted to create a solution to support marginalized families and individuals with finding and securing housing. We found official government datasets with hundreds of thousands of entries on housing for these types of people, yet noticed this information has only been seen by a few dozen people. Besides being obscure to find in the first place, filtering and sorting the data was slow and difficult to navigate. We make this data much more accessible through an easy to navigate interface, displaying the most useful fields, summarizing the lengthy data explanations, and sharing other links and information.

What it does

Homeable is a web application that allows users to find housing information about various cost-effective neighborhoods across the United States via search query.

Users can see affordable and available homes on a map, as a street view, and more detailed information on click. Details include cost of rent at such properties, how many units are currently available, the types of people who utilize this housing, and contact information for any user who wants to follow-up with property management and secure their next home. This information is in a table form below the map, and users can also filter all results (i.e. only see properties for the elderly, handicapped, or families).

We've also provided links for users to further refine their housing search and to help them determine what properties will work best in their future.

How we built it

  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development API (ArcGIS)
  • Google Maps API / React Google Maps
  • React / JavaScript
  • HTML / CSS

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learned how to use an API, React, and Github in just a few hours, along with using the Google Maps API specifically and creating API keys.

What's next for Homeable

  • Researching this data in relation to gentrification using Census data
  • Use current users location to search
  • Table sorting
