Inspiration
We noticed that individuals, particularly females, have low feelings of personal safety when walking to their destination (especially at night). In order to address this issue, we decided to create a routing site that would provide the safest route for individuals.
What it does
The site maps out the safest route between the starting point and destination of the user. Furthermore, the site provides breaking news events along the specified path.
How we built it
We utilized HTML, CSS, and Javascript to form the foundation of the site. In order to provide the map, routing, and news elements we used leaflet.js, Mapbox and NewsAPI respectively.
Challenges we ran into
We found it was difficult to get the several APIs to work together. There were also some difficulties configuring the CSS styling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of getting the APIs to work properly and having the site designed nicely. Also, we are proud of the light/dark mode feature that we added to the site.
What we learned
We learned how to make APIs work and the debugging process. Additionally, we learned how to collaborate simultaneously on VSCode.
What's next for Home Safe Site
In the future, we would like to add a toggle to balance between route safety and efficiency, showing the safest vs. fastest route, and support for other forms of transport (i.e. cycling, cars, etc).
